With AC Milan leading 1-2 away from home, Marco van Basten added another in the 76th minute to make it 1-3. The goal stretched a one-goal margin to two as the match entered its closing stages. Napoli did pull one back afterward, but it was not enough to draw level, and the match finished 2-3. Given how close the hosts came at the end, van Basten's strike proved to be a significant one.
